This morning the president* told Pelosi and Schumer he’s willing to keep the Federal government shut down for weeks or a year or LONGER. He just affirmed that he said that on live television.
Just so ya know, no one’s getting a Federal tax refund until the government shut down is over.
Maybe you want to call your Senator and ask them to vote on the Continuing Resolution to fund the government that already passed unanimously a week ago. They can override a presidential veto.
The switchboard for US Senate is (202) 224-3121.
**** I’m editing my original post to include some statistics that show this is a manufactured crisis.***
Let’s look at some data, shall we?
Unauthorized immigration is at its lowest point since 2004: There are currently 10.4 million unauthorized immigrants living in the US.
Apprehensions at the Southwest border peaked in 2000 at 1.64 million and have generally declined since, totaling 303,916 in 2017 (A decline of 81%) between 2016 and 2017, apprehensions declined by 43%. Without a wall.
In 2000, when apprehensions peaked at 1.64 million, there were 8,580 agents assigned to the border with Mexico. Without a wall.
65% of undocumented immigrants have overstayed their visa, not crossed the border. A wall will not help.
24.9% of immigrants crossing the border do so as a legal family unit, up from 3.6% in 2013.
There is only a recidivism rate of 10% among undocumented immigrants.
Statistically, undocumented and legal immigrants commit far fewer crimes per capita the native born Americans, including homicide and larceny.
In 70% of urban areas where there has been a rise in immigration, crime has fallen or stayed the same.
Roughly 105,000 immigrants arrested by ICE in 2017 had been previously convicted of crimes, but minor offenses such as driving violations are included in that number.
Since 1982, there have been 107 mass shootings. 60 of them were committed by white men. It’s going to take me a while to do the math and figure out how many individuals those 60 white men killed. I’ll get back to you on that.
